Global Akhand Bhajan conducted at Prasanthi Nilayam:
Prasanthi Nilayam, November 13th, 2011: A 24-hr. Akhand bhajan (continuous devotional singing) was successfully concluded today at 6.00 p.m. in the Sai Kulwanth Hall, in Prasanthi Nilayam, officially signifying the commencement of the 86th Birth Anniversary celebrations of Sri Sathya Sai Baba. The Hall with a seating capacity of over 20,000 people was filled to capacity.
The highly-charged, melodious bhajan singing was led by the students of the Sri Sathya Sai University and enthusiastically followed by devotees from home and abroad.
The Global 24-hr. Akhand Bhajan started in 1944, in the home of the late Dr. R.S. Padmanabhan of Bangalore, where nine families met in the presence of Sri Sathya Sai Baba to conduct the bhajan. From that humble beginning attended by 150 people, this Bhajan is now conducted every year around the same time, at Sai centres all over India and in 126 countries in the world. This is in keeping with Sri Sathya Sai Baba's sentiments that he expressed during a discourse in 1986:
"We are having non-stop 24-hr. global devotional singing by Sai devotees all over the world. This is being done not for the sake of one individual, one nation or one community. It is for the welfare of humanity as a whole."
Special prasadam was distributed to all at the end of the function.
